Tournaments, Dates, League

Good evening everyone.

Just a quick post to let you know what is going on at the moment... :-)

Our last league match takes place this Friday - away game vs Boston Primary.  Two teams will go - the under 13's and under 11's.  Letter were handed out today, please sign the consent form and send it back to school as soon as possible.

As mentioned before, I was trying to organise a third friendly tournament for the 7th of June.  This will unfortunately not take place because the grade 7's are starting their exams on that day.  As a rule, no sport to take place at school when the exams are being written.

With that being said, I contradict myself by advertising the following event:
There is a chess tournament (nothing to do with me or the school), taking place in Cape Town on the 8th of June.  I'm not going to go in to a lot of detail, but you can read more on this on their website, by clinking on the following link: http://www.africanchesslounge.com/events.html  I will send out a letter for those interested in this week.

I haven't forgotten about our 'daily chess puzzle', I just didn't have time to load the next couple on the blog, things are going a bit hectic at the house and at the school!

Just one last thing, just in case I don't get to blogging the rest of the week - I'm running the Comrades marathon on Sunday (2 June)!  So hold thumbs that everything is going to go well.  I will let you know how it went.

It will be broadcast on SABC 2 from 5:00 till 18:00.  You can also track me by SMS'ing my race number (43051) to 38132 at a cost of R10 (going towards charity).  You will receive 5 SMS's on the day with my progress.

League Match 3 vs Gene Louw

Good day everyone.

After this weeks practise, where I had all the under 13's play each other in three rounds 'tournament', the positions of the day were determined.

Here are the results of yesterday's league matches vs Gene Louw:
The under 13's drew: 3 - 3, with
Trevor Rademeyer
Liam Meyer
Chad Mckenzie,
winning their games.  Congratulations!

For the under 11's, we lost 1 - 5, with only
Alex Mckenzie
winning his game.  Congratulations!

I must also mention that in a friendly match after most of the games were completed, Allan (nr.6 for the under 11's, DOB 2004), played against Kevin, Gene Louw's nr.6 for the under 13's, DOB 1999 - and won him! It just goes to show that age is not a factor in the game of chess.

Last but not least, I must say Happy Birthday to Amberleigh, who had the honour of chosing finger-or-thumb to determine who will play which colour in the matches.  She chose white, which meant that Aristea's players 1, 3, and 5 played white.  Unfortunately for her, she was playing board number 4 which meant that she was playing black - not her favourite colour.

Yours in Chess

:-)

Daily puzzle: 21 May 2013

Good afternoon everyone!

Especially to all the parents:  We are playing our next league game this Friday afternoon against Gene Louw.  Two teams are playing namely our under 13 "A"-team and an under-11 team.  I didn't hand out letters today, because I didn't have my laptop with me to help with the drawings to see who is going to be in the top 6.

I will give letters tomorrow for the under 11's, but will give the under 13's letters on Thursday afternoon.  I hope you understand and I apologise for the inconvenience for short notice of a chess match.

Back to today: here is the next daily puzzle.  I know it is a bit small, but that is okey to.

Enjoy

Friendly tournament II - 17 May 2013

Hello again.

We had our second friendly tournament last Friday, the 17th of May 2013.  Here is the 'report':

Changes:
I invited a friend of mine teaching at Parow-East Primary School, to bring their chess players to come and join in the tournament.  He brought 8 players, making it a bit more interesting for our players to play not only against our own learners.

Another change from the previous tournament, is that I gave the top 10 players from last time a better rating so that the first rounds draw won't be decided alphabetically like last time.  I think it was fairer this way.  If you don't agree with me, please, I want to know what I should have done so that I can learn from it.

Proud moments:
I must share with you how proud I was of three of my beginner learners: Allan Nel, Nathan van Staden and Jan Goosen, won their first games!  I could see the elation on their faces and I could see what that had meant for them.  Congratulations you guys! Keep on playing plenty of games and you will win more and more games.

Final results:
This is only the top ten of the tournament.  I can say that everyone who played had at least a half a mark.

Thanks
Thanks to all the players who played the game in such a good spirit!  I could see that you enjoyed the afternoon of chess.  Thank you to Mr. Brewis and the Parow-East Primary learners for coming and enjoying the day with us. We will do so again.  Then, thank you for the parents supporting your learners, and thanks to Marie managing the tuck shop!

Next date
Hold thumbs that we will have another tournament this term.  I must organise it first with school management.  It will depend on when exactly the exams start, because the intended date I have in mind is the 7th of June.  This time, I'm going to invite more schools, to make it a bit bigger.  Which will mean it will be a bit cheaper - R10 in stead of R15.  If schools are interested, we will see if we can make it on a Saturday this time.  All in due course, I will keep you posted!

:-)

Kind regards

Mr. Bekker

New page title: Beginners

Hi everyone

This is just a short message to say that I have updated (changed) the blog.

I put in a new page, namely "Beginners" - next to the photos (also new, for about a week now).
If you click on the page, it will open a new web page that will teach you everything about chess.

The page is specifically focused on beginners - those who want to learn, and those who don't know how to play, but wants to.

Beginners, enjoy!

League Match 2 vs Durbanville

Updated post:
I uploaded the two photos that was taken during the day on the photos tab.
For your convenience, you can just click here to go to the tab.

Good day everyone!

This is what happened on Friday, the 10th of May in our second league match.  This time against Durbanville Primary at their school.

But first, let me take you back to this week and Tuesday, where we had to finalise who is going to play on Friday and at which board number.  I chose 8 boys who played each other in three rounds, and the final results provided me the players and the board numbers, which were as follows:

1. Liam Meyer
2. Craig Strydom
3. Jacques Claassen
4. Chad McKenzie
5. JJ Oosthuizen
6. Trevor Rademeyer
7. Ndinani Sibelekwana

During the match (the result form I will get from Durbanville and post here on Monday), only two of our boys won their games, namely, Chad and Trevor. Congratulations!

Thus we unfortunately lost the match, 2 - 4.

A BIG thank you to Mr. Delport, providing the bus transport, and congratulations to Durbanville.  We wish you all the best for your league games this year.

This coming week:
Our second friendly tournament takes place this coming Friday, the 18th of May.  Depending on the number of entrants, we will provisionally play again in Mrs Grobler's classroom like last time.  More details will follow closer to the time.

I will also try to upload daily puzzles again this week, so keep an I out for that!

I hope you have a great weekend.

:-)

Friendly Tournament I - 3 May 2013

Good afternoon everyone.

Our first friendly tournament of the year took place on Friday 3 May 2013.  We had 16 players taking part.  They all played together – beginners and more experienced players against each other in one section.  We had about 4 beginners, the youngest being Allan Nel, representing the grade 2 class!

Round 1
The first round was an interesting one with the youngest player, Allan, playing white on board number 1!  It had the making of a great round, and a good start to the tournament.  We had 5 very interesting match ups:
Liam Meyer and Keegan Walker, two grade seven boys, on the last board.
Alex McKenzie and Luke Roos, two grade four boys against each other, and
Craig Strydom and Chad McKenzie – two grade six boys against each other!
The other two was the two Rademeyer brothers, playing against the Kritzinger sisters.

Round 2
The second round had three games that had very deserving draws.  And it had one upset – Alex McKenzie, grade 4 winning Wouter Rademeyer – last year’s grade 7 boy.  He is currently in grade 8 in Monument Park High School, in Kraaifontein.

Round 3 and 4
In the meantime, JJ Oosthuizen and Trevor Rademeyer were winning all their games they played, and met each other in the final on board number one.  The final round was won by JJ, giving him a perfect score of 4.0 / 4.0 and winning our first friendly tournament of the year.  His first prize was a gold medal and a brand new Aristea Chess T-Shirt.

CONGRATULATIONS JJ on winning your first tournament!

One thing that I must mention, is the fact that no one had a zero score – even the last placed player had at least 0.5.

Bucholtz Tie-Break system
In this tie-break system, the sums of opponents’ scores are added used.  The idea is that the same score is more valuable if achieved against players with better performances in a given tournament.  Looks like an ideal tie-breaking method and has been used since the Swiss system was invented.

Thank you
Thank you to all the players for the spirit that the games were played in.  I really enjoyed it, and it seemed from your reactions that you enjoyed the afternoon of chess as well.  I hope to see all of you at our next friendly tournament on the 17th of May!  Tell all your friends who missed out so that they can come and join in the fun.

Photos
I took quite a number of photos during the day.  A preview is available for you to view the images on the new photos tab above the posts.  If you want to save the photos on your computer and print them, you are more than welcome to do so.

If you want to enter our next tournament, you can enter online, by clicking here to go to the link.

I hope you have a fantastic day and great weekend further!
